Summary:

Still aboard the Sunny, the Straw Hats search for Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji in the dark depths of the Deep Sea. It’s hard to search the water because it’s so dark. Even the beams of the Sunny’s headlights could not penetrate that far into the water. The ship is then surrounded by a swarm of giant jellyfish. One of the jellyfish poked one of its tentacles through the coating bubble. Chopper tries to touch it, but Robin yells at him not to because they are poisonous. Franky uses Coup de Burst just as the giant fish bites the jellyfish. Brook notices that the Coup de Burst has lowered the air level on the ship somewhat. Right after he says this, the large fish turns onto its back, killed by the nerve toxin inside the jellyfish. Chopper notices that there are a lot of fish with white eyes. Brook notes that the eyes on many fish at this level are vestiges, so he can’t see them at all. Usopp and Chopper take advantage of this and start teasing the big fish. Robin then states that there are also fish whose eyes have evolved to see in the dark. After resuming the search, Brook notices that Caribou has escaped from the ropes holding him. No one has seen Caribou since they arrived in the Deep Sea, suggesting that they may have thrown him overboard. Caribou is indeed hiding in a barrel nearby as everyone realizes he could be hiding anywhere on the ship and needs to be even more alert. Caribou considers sneaking into the girls’ room, saying that he had planned to. He seemed pleased that the Monster Trio was gone, thinking/saying that they must all be dead by now. He was disappointed that he couldn’t take Luffy’s head, but figured the heads of the rest of the crew would be just as good. He will wait until they land on Fish-Man Island to attack.
While he thinks about all this. Franky spots him in the barrel. It pushes the barrel cap down and seals the barrel by ropes and bolting large metal retaining plates to the sides of both ends of the barrel. Franky realizes that Caribou allowed himself to be hit by Sanji earlier to hide his mud-like Logie powers. Franky concludes that the crew would be in trouble if Caribou wasn’t such an idiot. As Franky leaves, the Caribou from the barrel begs Franky to let him out, saying that he would become Franky’s slave if he did, calling him “Mister Trunks”. Franky then notices that something is bothering Chopper and asks him what’s going on. Chopper says it’s really hot and Usopp agrees. The crew then notices that they are heading into a cloud of smoke. Nami realizes that the smoke underwater, along with the hydrothermal mineral deposits, may mean they were in a deep-sea volcanic region. Sunny is right above the mouths of several volcanoes. Franky realizes that if the volcanoes erupt they will be killed instantly and proceeds to steer the ship away from the volcanoes. The crew is then chased by carnivorous tube worms, a noppera crab and several other creatures. Chopper complains that he can’t go on living and misses Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, saying that he’s been waiting two years to see them, and when he finally does, he disappears. Chopper then notices a light in the distance and wonders if they have arrived at Fish-Man Island. Nami says no, because they still have 3000 meters to go. Using the nipple light, Franky asks in morse code “W-H-O-A-R-E-Y-O-U-?” The light turned out to belong to a giant anglerfish. The fish tries to eat the ship, but is stopped by a giant humanoid creature. Usopp identifies it as an umiboza, a sea giant (sea devil). The giant punches the fishing fish, which is called Ankoro, saying that it shouldn’t have been attacking ships and that Captain Vander Decken would be angry with them. Brook then hears someone singing. A ghost ship approaches from behind the giant. The ship is old and its parts are worn. Everyone was shocked at the sight, even Brook, prompting Usopp to say that Brook shouldn’t be surprised.
Brook identifies the ship as “the real thing”, the Flying Dutchman. He then went on to describe the history of the ship and its captain. It’s called “The Ship That Shouldn’t Be”. The story goes back hundreds of years. On a stormy day, the captain went crazy and started throwing his crew overboard, killing them all. The captain’s name was Vander Decken. He incurred the wrath of God and was condemned to eternal wandering on the sea, forbidden to enter the port. That ship is the exact same ship he sees in front of him, Vander Decken’s cursed ship.
Vander Decken, whose entire body was in shadow except for his arm, told the fisherman and the giant, who was named Wadatsumi, that they would not get the treasure if they ate the boat. He tells them to “knock it off”. Someone yelled at Franky to use Coup de Burst, but Franky said they couldn’t because they were out of fuel right then. They are saved when a kraken appears out of nowhere and punches Wadatsumi in the chin. Everyone on the ship is surprised to see it again. Vander Decken calls the Kraken the “Monster of the Arctic”. The Kraken continues to beat up the giant until Luffy orders it to stop, which it does. Everyone is relieved to see that Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji are alive, all three of them in the same bubble. Wadatsumi is unconscious with large bruises. Luffy tells them that his and Sanji’s bubbles burst so they all had to share Zoro’s. Luffy didn’t like it in that cramped bubble. He sprawls out on the deck of the ship, happy to have so much space. Franky notes how much vitality they all have. Nami asks if they really tamed the kraken. Luffy says he will turn the kraken he named Surume into a top navigator when Surume places the Thousand Sunny on his head. Usopp says they should be careful not to crush the ship. Everyone then hears a booming sound coming from one of the volcanoes. Vander Decken’s crew alerts him that there is trouble when Nami realizes that the volcano is about to erupt.
