Summary:

The Straw Hats arrive at Fireworks Island just in time for its annual fireworks festival. Locals explain that the tradition of the festival has been going on for 400 years and is carried on by the family that lives on top of the mountain on the island, although now it’s just an old man and his granddaughter. This reminds Usopp that they need gunpowder, so he heads to the mountain to get some from the old man.

Usopp arrives at the mountain and is immediately sent away by old man Odam, as he has no time for a “newbie firework maker” like him, especially on a festival day. Usopp tries to convince him by showing Adam a firework he made himself, but instead he is amazed by the huge firework in the old man’s house.

Kodama arrives and inspects Usopp’s fireworks, praising them and urging Usopp to “finish it”.

Meanwhile, Odama admonishes Kodama for wasting her time and sends her off to finish her tasks at the festival. He then orders Usopp to help Kodama, which Usopp reluctantly does after the young girl asks him for help.

The two bond and Kodama compliments Usopp’s fireworks again, telling him to “finish it”. He explains that every firework display is considered incomplete until it blooms beautifully in the night sky. Usopp then mentions the huge fireworks display he saw earlier and how he wishes it would go off. Kodama explains that they tried to set off a similarly huge firework a year ago, but the equipment was faulty and there was an accident that killed both of her parents.

Suddenly, it starts raining again and Kodama mentions that the party can’t go on if it keeps raining. Still, Odama tells them to continue their preparations.

Kodama tells Usopp that, weather permitting, he plans to set off a huge firework display on the night of the festival. This makes Usopp nervous as he thinks she can’t set off such a large firework herself. She assures him that the launch team will help her set up the fireworks, but she will set them off herself so everyone else will be safe. She says that their family had the technical skills to make and launch .200 caliber shells, but they lost those skills somewhere along the way, and that her parents’ dream was to revive the tradition and bring those skills back. She then asks Usopp to distract her grandfather while she and the launch team take the grenade away.

However, Odama learns of Kodama’s plan from the launch team and forbids his granddaughter from launching the grenade. Kodama runs off and Odama tells everyone else to get ready for the festival.

Usopp notices something about the tower in the old man’s house and asks if it’s been there for 400 years. Then she says she has an inkling she wants to share with him.

Usopp then finds Kodama in the cemetery where her parents are buried. Usopp makes her realize that her parents’ dream is not just to launch a 200-gauge grenade, but that she is their dream. Their dream is for her to continue the family tradition and become a master pyrotechnician. He tells her that while it would be great to bring back their old family tradition, her parents want her to be safe and sound.

The rain suddenly stops and this lifts the girl’s spirits. Festival proceeds and fireworks are displayed in the night sky. Odama then reveals that Usopp was able to devise a pulley system that would pull the 200-gauge shell towards the tower in the old man’s house. It was further revealed that said tower is actually a 400-year-old launch pad for their family’s 200-caliber grenades. Usopp and Odama prepare to set off the grenade after lighting all the other fireworks. When Kodama fires his last one, Usopp “finishes” his fireworks and then has Odam ignite a 200-gauge grenade that blooms across the island in a gigantic finale.

Kodama sees this and is even more inspired to become a great pyrotechnician. Usopp takes this opportunity to ask for some gunpowder again and Odama at first says no because Usopp could be a pirate for all he knows but then backs down.
