Summary:

The episode begins with Nami repeating what she realized at the end of the previous episode: because rubber does not conduct electricity, Luffy is immune to Enel’s lightning attacks. Enel wakes up and jumps away from Luffy. He doesn’t understand what Luffy is, and Luffy tells him that he’s a pirate and a rubber man, which confuses Enel even more because the White-White Sea doesn’t have rubber.

Luffy attacks Enel again, but with his mantra, Enel dodges every shot and begins to defend himself with his golden staff, pinning Luffy to the wall. He points out that lightning isn’t the only weapon he can use, and once he realizes something isn’t working, he can adjust his strategy accordingly. Still, Luffy runs away and tells him that hitting him won’t work either.

Both opponents are frustrated with each other: Luffy because of Enel’s mantra and Enel because he still doesn’t understand what rubber is. Remembering that Luffy’s Devil Fruit was a Paramecia type, he uses his electric power to turn his golden staff into a spear and attack Luffy with it. To Nami’s dismay, Luffy confirms out loud that piercing attacks work on him.

The fight continues. Luffy tries to use a gatling attack in the air, but Enel suddenly dematerializes and reappears through the ship’s gold to attack Luffy with a spear. Luffy dodges it, but burns his hands holding the spear. When Enel explains that he can use his electrical powers to heat up the weapon, Luffy charges him into the ground. Enel then grabs Luffy’s arms and slams him to the ground as well.

Enel stood up and spoke about the new world he was about to launch and how Luffy can’t stop him and leaves. Using his lightning powers, he powers up the Ark Maxim, which begins to rise into the air. Aisa and Pierre, who have been watching the fight from below, panic about what to do. Nami is also panicking and trying to figure out what to do. If Enel is killed, the ark will crash into the ground because it runs on his powers, but if they let him fly, Skypiea will be destroyed. Luffy stood up and threw his straw hat on her head and told her as teammates of the future pirate king that she should have more faith in herself. Enela took the title and Luffy told him that the pirate king rules the greatest sea in the world and Enel appreciates that, but the fight must continue. Maxim starts to fly away, but is slightly stuck to the walls of the cave. Aisa rides Pierre and Pierre seems to suggest that they get on board as well, but she tells him that a warrior’s fight should never be interrupted and that this is Luffy’s fight.

Meanwhile, the people of Angel Island rush to get off the island. McKinley tries to lead them and avoid panic. He notices an old man just sitting there with tears in his eyes. He says that he has believed in God for too long and is ready to accept whatever destiny God has in store for him. But McKinley gives him a tearful speech about how God has no right to take their lives and they have a duty to survive. The old man decides to leave and his grandson is grateful to McKinley. Several villagers approach McKinley to tell him that they are going to the Shandia village to also warn them of the impending disaster.

Enel tells Luffy and Nami that the ship’s “ultimate function” – Deathpiea – has been activated and the chimney starts spewing black clouds into the sky. All around, the islanders notice the clouds in the sky. Now up, Robin looks longingly at Zoro, Chopper, and Gan Fall when Wyper notices the dark clouds. Some Shandia also look at them and say that this is the first time this has happened in Skypiea and this brings bad news about the warriors that are in the Upper Yard. The residents of Angel Island also panic at the sight of the clouds, thinking it is the beginning of the end.

Enel explains that Deathpiea uses Enel’s electrical energy to condense intense air currents and create storm clouds. Once spread throughout Skypiea, Enel will be able to destroy the entire island with lightning. To illustrate his point, he raises his arm and a huge bolt of lightning comes out of the storm clouds and destroys several buildings on Angel Island in front of the terrified fleeing residents. McKinley and then Conis on her wobble both see this from afar and curse Enel. Enel tells Luffy and Nami that it was just “teasing”.

Luffy is horrified that being a God means taking everything Enel wants to take from him. Enel says he will take Luffy’s life now. The fight restarts and each fighter is able to dodge the other’s attacks, although Luffy keeps burning his legs and arms with the spear whenever he pushes him away.

After Enel fails to anticipate one of Luffy’s instinctive ploys in a spear attack and slightly damages the ship, Luffy gets an idea and enters a Gomu Gomu no Daze state. Enel keeps attacking with his spear, but Luffy swings and weaves like “grass in the wind” and doesn’t get hurt. Nami realizes that Luffy’s plan was to put himself into “non-thinking” mode. He reflexively dodges the attack with air currents, but since he is dazed, he does so unconsciously and Enel’s mantra cannot predict what his movements will be.

Luffy snaps out of it and points out that he can’t attack in that dazed state. Then Luffy goes Gomu Gomu no Tako (Octopus) and Nami is horrified that he’s trying a new stupid idea. Luffy’s arms and legs turn into tentacles and Luffy turns around and starts pounding on Maxim’s wall like crazy. Enel is confused and thinks that Luffy is trying to destroy the ship. Enel lunges at Luffy, but Luffy’s hundreds of striking arms bounce off the wall back at Enel, and Enel is hit. Nami realizes that since the hits come from the natural reflection of the blows on the wall and Luffy isn’t thinking anything, Enel can’t see them.

Luffy “bazooka-es” at Enel and Enel is weakened and bloodied and starts to panic. As the episode ends, we see Luffy lunging at Enel and preparing to attack Goma Goma without his rifle and an obviously desperate Enel struggling to get up, telling himself he needs to get away.
