Summary:

As Toko and the citizens of Ebisu town laugh at Yasuie’s death, the Straw Hat Pirates learn that only one of the ten SMILE fruits causes animal transformation; other fruits only render their eaters unable to express negative emotions. Orochi took the remains of the defective fruit and mixed it with the remains of the wealthy citizens, causing the citizens of the remaining cities such as Ebisu to consume them. Orochi attempts to shoot Toko as he heads for the execution stand, but both Zoro and Sanji stop the bullets and confront him.
Decades ago in Hakumai, Yasuie caught several of Oden’s henchmen, among them Kin’emon, Kanjuro, Raizo, Inuarashi, Nekomamushi, Shutenmaru, Kawamatsu, and Denjiro, trying to steal money from him to give to Oden. Oden’s group of henchmen awaited their execution, but Yasuie instead decided to give them the money they tried to steal, as well as another bag, even though his associate said that Hakumai would be out of money. He told them to spend money on books to learn from, because in order for Oden to become Shogun, his charges would have to become the best samurai of the land of Wano, as they would one day serve as its supreme guardians.
In the present, Kin’emon, Kanjuro, Raizo, Inuarashi, Shutenmaru, and Kawamatsu cry as they watch Yasuie fall dead while broadcasting Tanishi. The citizens of Flower Capital try to drive the citizens of Ebisu out of the area and wonder why they are laughing hysterically. Hiyori tells Zoro that Orochi and SMILE are responsible for taking them out of their grief, and Zoro is confused about SMILE’s role in this. While Hiyori mourns the scene as hell for the citizens of Ebisu Town, the approaching Orochi relishes Yasuie’s death and reaction to it, comparing the scene to heaven. Kanjuro, Shinobu, Sanji, Nami, Usopp and Franky reach the Flower Capital and Kanjuro and Shinobu lament their inability to save Yasuie while the Straw Hats are confused by the reactions of the citizens of Ebisu. In the Prison Mines, Queen enjoys the scene and Luffy wonders why the citizens are laughing; Hyogoro replies that it’s a side effect of the SMILE he also saw in prison. On Onigashima, Kaidou laughs at Orochi’s brutality.
Shinobu then explains the side effects of SMILEs to her group. A few years ago, Kaidou and Orochi began trading weapons to Caesar Clown and Donquijote Doflamingo in exchange for SMILE, which Kaidou used to make his crew the strongest in the world. However, only one in ten people who ate SMILE received the ability from it. Everyone else simply received the fruit’s side effects, losing the ability to swim as well as the ability to express negative emotions, causing them to only be able to express joy. Among the Pirate Beasts, the Waiters are those who have yet to consume SMILE, the Gifters are those who have eaten the fruit and successfully gained powers, and the Pleasures are the larger group who have eaten SMILE and received nothing but its side effects. Kaidou, Doflamingo and Caesar named the fruit SMILE after its most notable side effect. The defective fruit still contained these side effects after being partially eaten, so Orochi decided to use it to deal with the people of the remaining cities who were plagued daily with sadness and grief due to the constant deaths among them. Finding it unpleasant, he mixed the defective SMILE with the other remnants that were fed by the cities that were left, causing those citizens to lose the ability to express grief and anger.
Hiyori also explains this to Zoro and Brook when Toko reaches the execution platform and tries to save her father with some toad oil. Hiyori begs her to return before Orochi spots her, and the Straw Hats are horrified to see her in danger. Orochi sees Toko and points a rifle at her, intending to kill her for causing Komurasaki’s death. He fires bullets directly at her head, but Zoro and Sanji simultaneously break the barrier and neutralize the bullets. The citizens are shocked to see the two recently infamous men together, including Drake and Hawkins, and Zoro and Sanji react with surprise when they find themselves side by side for the first time in weeks.
